Is it green mold?

Hey Shroomok

I followed your guide and finally got a beautiful tub with many small mushrooms popping out Could you check those cakes? I worry about green thing on mycelium (bottom part of photo), is it trich? If so can I rescue small shrooms?

Hello!

Yes, unfortunately, it’s contaminated. Most likely it’s an early stage of Penicillium mold, which typically turns fully green in 2–3 days, whereas Trichoderma usually turns green within 24 hours.

Please don’t cut the contaminated area, touch the cake, or fan it! Instead, let’s try a workaround: apply salt (or baking soda) directly to the contaminated area (I've marked them on your photo with red circles).

Green mold contamination on mushroom cake

You can either:

  1. Pour salt/soda directly onto the contaminated spot OR

  2. Soak a paper towel in salt or soda solution, place it over the contaminated area and pour some dry salt/soda on it and around the edges (see example from the guide).

This method helps seal off the contamination to prevent spores from spreading, slows it down, and may allow you to save this flush.

Feel free to show me how you applied it—I’ll be happy to take a look and give feedback!

Yes, so far so good! 👌 Let’s check on the cake again in 2–3 days. By then, your mushrooms should be ready for harvest.

For future grows, focus more on preventing contamination rather than relying on treatment or quick fixes like this.

Yes, they are ready! Congrats! 🎉

Unfortunately, there’s another contaminated spot (see photo).

So go ahead and harvest your mushrooms, then say goodbye to this cake. You can salt the contaminated area BEFORE harvesting in order to seal contam and avoid possible spreading in the air (although, it is still white).

Treatments like this aren’t a guarantee that contamination won’t return! But hey, you gained some extra time for your mushrooms. That’s a win!

Thank you, Shroomok! You’re the best!

I've harvested my shrooms and salted contam again. Small pins are still there, I want to harvest them 😄

Maybe I can harvest another flush lol
