Pressure Cook Jars on Side?

Hello,

I was wondering if I could sterilize grain spawn jars on their side in a pressure cooker because the jars are too tall for my pressure cooker. They have an inoculation port and a hole for a small air filter so does that lessen the chance of the jar exploding/breaking?

Thank you, servesyouxright

Hello! Yes, you can put the jars on their sides. Just make sure the water level is a few centimeters or about an inch below the air filter. You can use a PC's stand or wire rack and put jars on it, they shouldn't float in water. And cover the lids with foil.

Even if the jars touch the PC, it should be fine as long as the steam can pass freely in and out of the jars through the air filter, preventing the jars from exploding/breaking.

As an example:

Is it safe to sterilize grain if the top three quart jars are touching the PC
Is it safe to sterilize grain if the top three quart jars are touching the PC?

One layer of jars at the bottom of PC also fine.

All the best, Shroomok
